What to expect

First appointment

The first appointment is a psychological assessment. It is an opportunity to explore what has been happening and when the difficulties first started.  An assessment can take place between one and three sessions.

Following the assessment, we can decide together whether psychological therapy will be helpful for you and the kinds of approaches we might use together.  We will agree some goals for the work and I will be able to give you an idea of how many sessions you may need. We will also build in review sessions so we can think together about how the work is going, and whether we need to make any changes to the treatment plan.

Sometimes a one-off assessment is all that is required.  Completing a thorough psychological assessment and providing some psycho-education may be enough to enable you to make any necessary changes for future management of any difficulties experienced.

Therapy duration

Each person's situation is unique and the number of sessions required will vary according to a number of factors, including the complexity of the situation, motivation, timing, and the impact of environmental circumstances.  Being ready to engage in and commit to therapy maximises opportunities for psychological growth.

An estimation of how many sessions are needed should be possible after the initial appointment although this will be reviewed regularly. In general, between 6 to 10 sessions will be required. More sessions may be necessary where significant long standing and / or early relational traumas are identified.

Therapeutic approach

I draw from a variety of therapeutic approaches including;

  • Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR)

  • Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT)

  • Psychodynamic-informed therapy

  • Compassion-Focused therapy and mindfulness-based approaches.

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS)

I integrate these different approaches according to one’s individual treatment plans. A respectful and non-judgmental approach is central to my practice, enabling people to connect with their sense of resilience and resources to overcome life challenges and find a sense of ease and balance. I practice to a high standard, both responsibly and ethically, in accordance HCPC & BPS professional code of conduct.
